On the program, we have Richard Whymark and Greg Beets, authors of the local best seller, “A Curious Mix of People” and their special guest is Carl Normal from the legendary Austin band, Stretford. Stretford is a favorite amongst local Chicken Ranch artists and was an acclaimed and popular Austin band throughout the 90s.
We all met up at the Burnet Go To last month and had a free form interview complete with road noise. I hope this episode is half as fun to listen to as it was to participate in.
Buy “A Curious Mix of People” at University of Texas Press.
Be sure to pick up “A Curious Mix of People” in book or e-book format wherever cool books are sold in your area. Released in October of 2023, the book is the “Please Kill Me” of the nascent “Red River St.” Music scene, anchored by Emos at the corner of 6th and Red River.
Words cannot describe the toilets at Emos.
At the other end of the block, not faring any better in the toilet department, was The Blue Flamingo, the infamous gay/punk/dive bar owned and run by the always friendly Miss Laura, a trans woman (insert Laura info here).
One by one all these clubs have been closed, moved or sold and a lot of people in and around that music scene are no longer with us, including Miss Laura. But thanks to this book and the efforts of Richard, Greg, and artist Chepo Pena, this era lives forever.
