We’re Back. With a new album ‘The Low Way” (2013!) in the works. Big Lazy is the instrumental trio from New York City, with four releases on Tasankee Records: Amnesia (1996), Big Lazy (2000) New Everything (2002), Postcards from X (2007).
Big Lazy’s music dwells in the unmistakable landscape of gritty yet gracefully crafted American music. With stark instrumentation – electric guitar, acoustic bass and drums – the trio creates richly evocative soundscapes with a distinctly narrative quality and an undeniable sense of place. Simultaneously noir and pastoral, gothic and modern Big Lazy conjures images of everything from big sky country to seedy back rooms with deftness and a cinematic clarity.
The dean of American rock critics Robert Christgau has called Big Lazy ‘The Big Apple’s Crème de la Crème’. “Big Lazy, the elegantly gritty instrumental trio led by the extraordinary guitarist Stephen Ulrich, plays stunningly beautiful music that evokes everything from truckers’ romps to the haunting film scores of Bernard Herrmann.” says The New Yorker
References to film noir, spaghetti western, crime jazz, surf, rockabilly
and David Lynch films are all vague directions scribbled on napkins on a map-less journey. Big Lazy’s singular sound remains beyond category
